Prerequisites

Certified RDH or RDA

Participants must have a minimum of 1 year experience, be certified RDH or RDA, and hold a valid practice permit or hold the NDAEB written exam certificate.

Complete Clinical within 1 Year

Participants must enrol in the clinical session within 1 year of completing their theoretical final exam.

Overview

The Orthodontic Module is a hands-on training program designed to equip dental professionals with the specialized skills required to support orthodontic procedures.

This module is a valuable addition to the dental assisting profession. It focuses on the essential role of dental assistants during orthodontic treatments.

Upon completing the Risio Institute Orthodontic Module, participants will receive a certification acknowledging their specialized training in orthodontics. This certification will enhance their professional skills and open new career opportunities in orthodontic practices, contributing to improved patient care and dental practice efficiency.

Questions

When can students enrol in the program?

Students can enrol in the program and start anytime. Course access is provided upon receipt of payment.

What is the timeframe for completing the online theory and exam?

Students have 90 days to complete the online theory component and take the exam. A passing grade of 75% is required.

The program consists of 60 hours (5hours/week) of content, designed to be comfortably completed over 3 months. However, students are permitted to accelerate and complete the modules at their pace providing they complete before 90 days.

What does the program cost?

$1250.00 CAD total: $500 Theory + $750 Clinical, collected in full at the time of enrolment into the program.

Are there any funding options available for the Ortho program?

The Canada Job Grant is a joint federal-provincial program that provides funding for skill and trade training. This program provides funding towards training assistance, with costs shared between the federal and provincial governments. Eligibility and participation vary by province. We recommend reviewing your province’s current participation and requirements for more details.

What are the prerequisites?

The course prerequisites are:

  • Participants must be certified RDH or RDA and hold a valid practice permit.

How do I know dental industry professionals lead this program?

Carey-Ann Thurlow is a Registered Dental Assistant with 20+ years in the dental industry. Carey completed her MBA in 2019 through the University of Roehampton and began her PhD in June 2021. She is passionate about both the dental industry and business administration.
Carey-Ann previously chaired a successful dental assisting program in Calgary, while also facilitating in the program. Seeing her students achieve success is just one of Carey’s many missions!

Casey Sharp is a Registered Dental Assistant with 19+ years in the dental industry. Casey completed an eLearning certificate program through the University of Calgary to gain expertise in designing and creating online learning programs.

Casey worked alongside Carey-Ann at a successful dental assisting program in Calgary and facilitated students in both clinical and theoretical environments. Casey’s passion is witnessing the outcomes of the students in the program!

Instructors in the program are required to have a minimum of 5 years experience in the dental industry and must be Registered Dental Assistants. All theory instructors must also have completed the Adult Educator Certificate.

When and where are clinical sessions held, and how can students register?

Risio hosts clinical sessions quarterly at our Calgary and Toronto clinic locations. Clinical spans two full days, consistently scheduled on weekends (Saturday and Sunday).

Students can register for a clinical session once they have completed the theory component and successfully passed the exam.

Will I receive a certification upon completion?

Upon successfully completing the orthodontic course and clinical session, students become eligible to apply to their regulatory body for authorization to perform orthodontic advanced practices.

How long will it take to complete the program?

The program will take approximately 3 months or less to complete.

Can I apply for a student loan?

The Ortho program does not qualify for student loan funding, unlike some other programs like our Dental Assisting program. We recommend exploring alternative funding options, such as the Canada Job Grant, which may help cover training costs depending on your province’s participation and eligibility criteria.

Can I retake a test or evaluation if I am unsuccessful?

Students will be given one rewrite per exam. Additional rewrites may be requested by writing to the Academic Advisor. All circumstances will be reviewed by the Directors on an individual basis.  Students will be notified of the decision in writing.
